The Materials Scientist will serve as a technical leader, responsible for driving initiatives to support the manufacturing, efficiency, and quality control of all STC materials and products. They will advance our technology through R&D projects and grow company capability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Proactively support a culture of safety and quality as top organizational priorities
Lead process development projects in accordance with our technology roadmap and overall company growth initiatives
Interface with technology team counterparts to grow innovation capability by supporting introduction / driving scale-up qualifications of new materials and advancing equipment technology
Actively participate in the new product development process from concept to production for all new material products and technology
Advance material characterization learning by designing test programs/protocols on laboratory equipment for research, quality control or optimization purposes
Manage specifications and updates for all raw and manufactured materials
Develop and deliver training materials in areas identified that require increased organizational awareness and/or functional knowledge
Serve as a key technical resource to make rapid response decisions and implement action plans towards the resolution of material nonconformances, RMAs or product failures
Partner with cross-functional teams on continuous improvement projects affecting yields, capacity, cycle times and cost
Provide technical support to resolve manufacturing disruptions and material quality nonconformances, then develop and implement permanent, sustainable countermeasures to prevent reoccurrence
Collaborate with commercial team to manage customer inquiries, issues and joint development efforts
Contribute to the identification, justification and implementation of capital equipment and materials engineering projects to support manufacturing objectives
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is normally performed on site at STC’s facilities in St. Albans, Vermont, but domestic travel may be required. Office work may be in a climate-controlled office environment; time on the shop floor will be required, which can be noisy and dusty, as well as hot during the summer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves standing and walking for moderate periods of time, with typical office duties performed from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials & computer screens. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods, travel, and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work may include occasional lifting and carrying objects or pushing/pulling carts weighing approximately 50 pounds, such as products, tools, gauges and some equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in ceramic engineering, materials science or related technical field with a minimum of 5yrs experience; PhD degree preferred
Ability to conduct testing using a range of material characterization techniques and instruments
Experience driving new product development and/or materials research projects
Demonstrated problem-solving ability in a cross-functional environment
Proven track record of making data-driven decisions in high pressure situations
Strong organizational, analytical, and troubleshooting skills
Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
Ability to effectively communicate with personnel at varying levels of technical aptitude
Excellent time management skills
Ability to work independently
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Expertise in ceramic material batch formulations and characterization techniques
Experience with polymers used in ceramic material bodies and manufacturing
Thermal processing/sintering; firing cycle design
Demonstrated proficiency in statistical process control and analysis programs
