Serving Congress and the Supreme Court, the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is the builder and steward of the landmark buildings and grounds of Capitol Hill. Our staff preserves and maintains the historic buildings, monuments, art and inspirational gardens on the Capitol campus.
We are seeking an exceptional Supervisory Civil and Structural Engineer who will be responsible for supervising professional, technical, permanent, temporary and contract support staff in completing and executing engineering activities in the civil and structural disciplines.
This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer.

Position Duties
Supervisory Duties
Provides professional leadership and administrative direction for a team of civil, structural, other engineers and additional staff as required.
Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for employees.
Provides for employee skills enrichment and development through identification of opportunities for coaching, mentoring, and training and strives to achieve a standard level of work and collegiality across the team.
Project and Program Management
Plans, directs and controls assigned aspects of civil and structural engineering projects and the civil and structural program at the AOC.
Identifies actions required to execute the project and to accommodate changes leading to the assurance of civil and structural engineering requirements and efficient use of resources during the lifecycle of the project.
Provides program management by exercising project control and authority throughout the various phases of civil and structural engineering projects.
Ensures that practices and methodologies in the civil and structural engineering field are aligned with AOC standards, historic preservation principles and best practices.
Civil and Structural Engineering Management.
Exercises responsibility for planning, design, direction, execution and control of civil and structural engineering projects and programs for the AOC. Coordinates with Congressional staff offices and technical experts in civil and structural engineering project design, testing, installation, maintenance, repair and operation.
Provides civil and structural engineering design analysis and advance planning for preservation, changes in real property management methodologies for engineering related matters and its impact for systems and capabilities for proposed projects.
Reviews design concepts, calculations, final designs and construction documents for technical accuracy and compliance with contract documents and with AOC and national construction standards.
Technical Advice and Guidance
Works with all levels of local management and program officials, key personnel of other Agency locations, other government agencies and private industry to resolve and track complex and controversial problems that arise.
Assures the overall resolution of issues and identifies changes and repairs necessary for civil and structural engineering compliance in AOC properties and develops comprehensive plans to carry out changes.
Provides expert advice to officials and staff of AOC jurisdictions regarding civil and structural engineering aspects of design, modernization, operation, repair and maintenance systems and equipment.
Provides expert advice, leadership, management and facilitation on internal administrative creations, including but not limited to the Stormwater Retention Credit Board.
Researches and investigates civil and structural problems and incidents to determine actions required and the cause of the incident including recommended corrective action.
Oversees special civil and structural engineering studies that lead to major modifications of current systems and resolves key problems facing the AOC.
Serves as an expert technical contact and Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
Performs other related duties as assigned.
