JOB DESCRIPTION
STAFF ENGINEER II
EXEMPT
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
This is a professional civil engineering position that works in designing, planning, and inspecting Township construction and engineering projects. Considerable independent judgment and professional knowledge is required. Supervision is exercised over other Township staff. Work is performed under the supervision of the Engineering Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended as illustrations of the various types of work performed.)
Performs municipal engineering operations including the design specifications, estimates of cost, inspection, as-built drawings and measurements review, and surveying for a wide variety of civil engineering projects.
Gives technical assistance on methods of construction as to compliance with Township standards, local codes, ordinances and the Township Board's goals and objectives.
Reviews and evaluates inspection reports and prepares related correspondence with contractors and other agencies.
Reviews sits plan submittals for engineering review and development review committee.
Reviews quantities and pay requests for projects.
Supervises employees performing engineering related duties.
Manages Township projects through the use of consultants, contractors, other engineering staff, other Township divisions, and the public.
Acts as project lead and project manager for various engineering projects, including but not limited to sidewalk and road design and construction.
Performs detailed engineering reviews of public and private projects.
Acts as Project Manager for the Township Road Millage Program and Sidewalk Repair Program.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering preferred; or Bachelor's degree in Engineering along with experience and training which provides the desired knowledge, abilities, and skills.
A minimum of three years of related professional experience required; minimum of one year of municipal civil engineering experience required.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Minimum 1 year of experience leading to effective knowledge of the principles and practices of professional civil engineering, particularly as applied to municipal public works projects and related activities.
Extensive knowledge of construction methods, materials and equipment related to building construction, streets, sewers, water, and other public improvements.
Minimum 1 year of experience leading to effective knowledge of applicable ordinance provisions, State and local requirements and other regulations regarding construction and engineering projects.
Must possess a current, valid Michigan Driver's License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns; which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.
Minimum 1 year experience leading to effective knowledge of construction methods, materials and equipment related to building construction, streets, sewers, water, and other public improvements.
Ability to perform analyses, develop plan inspections, make decisions on complex engineering problems and related activities.
Ability to perform technical research work and to give reliable advice on construction problems.
Ability to analyze problems and to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to independently manage various projects.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other agencies, Township officials, and employees.
Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
