Position Description
Texas Tech University is investing in an exciting new cluster of research centered on agricultural and biosystems engineering and science. The aim is to create world-leading knowledge to solve critical problems for our region and the world in the broad areas of water, sensors and precision management, and human behavior and nutrition. The cluster will be supported by six faculty hires in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Whitacre College of Engineering, and the College of Health and Human Sciences.
The Department of Civil, Environmental, & Construction Engineering (CECE) in the Whitacre College of Engineering invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenured/tenure-track, Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor to begin September 1, 2025, with a focus on hydrologic modeling, especially for integrated water resources management of surface water and ground water resources in coupled natural-human systems such as agricultural and ag-urban settings. Water is a critical resource for arid and semi-arid regions around the world and the Llano-Estacado/playa region. Through modeling at various spatial-temporal scales (e.g., field, region, global versus diurnal, annual, and decadal), understanding the movement and tradeoffs among surface water, fresh groundwater, and non-traditional resources (e.g., municipal/domestic effluent, brackish and saline groundwater, etc.) is essential to conservation, sustainability, and resilience of water for society and ecosystems considering climate adaptation.

About the College
The Whitacre College of Engineering (WCOE, https://www.depts.ttu.edu/coe/) serves approximately 4800 undergraduate and 1300 graduate students, supported by 220 faculty and instructors. The college had 852 BS, 557 MS and 68 PhD graduates in the 2023-24 fiscal year. All incoming first year students are enrolled in a common foundational curriculum for all undergraduate programs. Foundational students declare a program of choice and can move into upper division after completing the foundational classes with a TTU GPA of 2.5 or higher. The WCOE consists of the Departments of Chemical Engineering; Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Petroleum Engineering. All BS programs and the Environmental Engineering Master’s program are ABET accredited. All departments have Master’s and PhD programs.
About the Department/School/Area
The Civil, Environmental, and Construction (CECE) Department currently has approximately 800 undergraduate students, 120 graduate students (46 PhD), and 31 tenure track faculty members. The Department offers ABET-accredited degrees including a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) and Construction Engineering, as well as a Master of Environmental Engineering (MEV). The Department also offers Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Civil Engineering. The department was awarded $7.4M in external funding in FY24. The Water and the Environment Research (WATER) Center has 16 engineering faculty with active research in water resources, water and wastewater treatment, and environmental contamination and remediation.
Major/Essential Functions
In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
As a faculty member in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering you will be expected to 1.) Contribute to the teaching mission of the department; 2.) Mentor graduate students; 3.) Develop a record of peer-reviewed and funded research; 4.) Provide service to the department, college, and university.
Faculty Qualifications
- A Ph.D. degree in engineering, such as civil engineering, hydrology, or water resources engineering by September 1, 2024
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil Engineering and Water Resources Engineering as evidenced by having successfully completed or taught relevant courses (e.g., hydrology, water resources, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Record of peer-reviewed publications in hydrologic modeling (commensurate with time in discipline)
- Record of leadership in research grant funding for projects related to hydrologic modeling (commensurate with time in discipline)
- Record of excellence in teaching courses related to water resources engineering (commensurate with time in discipline)
- Evidence of service, outreach, or involvement related to water resources engineering (commensurate with time in discipline)
