Overview
BER supports basic research in the natural sciences to advance environmental and biological knowledge that promotes national security through improved energy production, development, and use. The division is responsible for a broad multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research portfolio to develop fundamental biological information and to advance technology in support of DOE’s missions in biology and the environment. This includes research focused on the role of plants and microbes in processes related to bioenergy and bioproducts production from renewable biomass, biosystems design research and microbiome research to understand the biological cycling of carbon and nutrients in the environment.
The program manager will manage the Bioimaging Research portfolio which is part of BER’s Biomolecular Characterization and Imaging Science portfolio within BSSD. The Bioimaging Research portfolio currently focuses on fundamental science underpinning new methods to image, track and monitor structural and metabolic processes occurring within plant and microbial cells to assist BSSD’s broader genomic science efforts.
The program manager determines the scientific focus and direction of the biophysics, cell biology and bioimaging aspects of the research program, preparing calls for proposals, organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, organizing meetings, serving as a liaison on committees, and monitoring scientific progress of the program. The program manager conceives, justifies, plans, initiates, manages, and coordinates all aspects of a broad range of plant and microbial biophysics, cell biology and bioimaging efforts within the Division.
