The City of West Palm Beach is located along the beautiful Atlantic coastline in southeast Florida, approximately 75 miles north of Miami. The City has a strong Mayor form of government which combines the political leadership of the Mayor, who is responsible for running the affairs of the City, with the legislative authority of a five-member City Commission. The Engineering Services Department works collaboratively with all departments to maintain, design, and construct the existing and future infrastructure essential to the safety, health, and quality of life for the citizens, businesses, and visitors while managing a coordinated multimodal transportation system to provide mobility options for the growing city.
Under the general direction of and reporting to the Director of Engineering Services, the Traffic Engineer is involved in the planning, design, construction, and operations of roadways; performs administrative and managerial work related to traffic and transportation engineering; and coordinates the work of City transportation projects. The Traffic Engineer is responsible for the design and construction of traffic-related projects, evaluation of traffic and transportation engineering issues, and acts as the liaison between the City, other municipalities, Palm Beach County, and FDOT. The Engineering staff work very collaboratively together and the work environment within the department offers a rewarding experience and a great sense of accomplishment. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, team-oriented, and resourceful, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to effectively engage with many stakeholders, including residents, city staff, developers, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, etc.
Requirements include a verifiable bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in civil or traffic engineering or a related field, five (5) years of work experience in all aspects of traffic engineering, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. One (1) year of experience in the supervisory aspects of the work is required. A State of Florida Professional Engineer License is required; for application purposes, a valid Professional Engineer License from any state in the U.S. may be utilized, with the ability to obtain the State of Florida Professional Engineer’s license through reciprocation within sixty (60) days from the date of employment. Additionally, a current and valid Florida driver’s license is required or must be obtained within 30 days from the date of employment. Must meet additional special driving requirements per City policy. Starting salary is open and dependent upon qualifications; the City provides an excellent benefits package.
