The School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) at St. Mary's University, a private, four-year Catholic Marianist University in San Antonio, Texas, enthusiastically welcomes nominations and applications for a tenure-line position (9-month contract) at the assistant professor rank in Biomedical Engineering, beginning in Fall 2025. The ideal candidate for this position will have the unique opportunity to lead the development of the new Biomedical Engineering (BME) program, building on our highly successful Engineering Science program with a PreMed concentration. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in designing the BME curriculum, fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations, and lead the program through ABET accreditation. This is a defining moment to shape the future of Biomedical Engineering at St. Mary’s University.
Responsibilities:
Teaching: Deliver undergraduate courses in Biomedical Engineering. We seek candidates passionate about teaching and mentoring students, nurturing critical thinking, and preparing future engineers to tackle real-world challenges.
Research: Establish a substantive, independent research program within their area of expertise, involving undergraduate students. We encourage interdisciplinary collaborations both within the department and across disciplines, addressing global challenges and contributing to impactful research outcomes.
Service: Actively participate in departmental activities, university committees, and service initiatives. The candidate will foster a supportive academic environment, advancing the career development of underrepresented faculty and students, in alignment with the university’s commitment to Marianist values.
Qualifications:
Education: A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. ABD candidates expecting completion within one year will also be considered.
Research: A track record of scholarly achievements or strong potential for impactful research. Candidates with experience engaging undergraduate students in research, particularly those encouraging underrepresented participation in STEM, are highly encouraged to apply.
Teaching: A dedication to teaching excellence, with a passion for engaging students through both traditional and innovative methods. Prior teaching experience is advantageous.
Collaboration: A demonstrated ability or potential to collaborate across disciplines, fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives and experiences.

The Engineering Department houses seven engineering majors. The new BME program will be a natural extension of our current offerings, and the successful candidate will have opportunities for interdisciplinary research across the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology.
