THE POSITION Under general direction, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing engineering services for an assigned section including the planning and operations of City Traffic Facilities; the planning and design of various public works projects such as land development, traffic engineering, public works infrastructure, capital improvement projects, and daily departmental operations; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; performs advanced level engineering work; and performs related work as assigned. This recruitment is intended to fill a vacancy in the Traffic Engineering Division. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general direction from the Assistant City Engineer or other assigned staff. Exercises direct supervision of professional, technical, and administrative support staff. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the technical/supervisory level class in the professional engineering series. Incumbents supervise activities of an assigned section such as assigning work, preparing performance evaluations, assisting in personnel actions, supervising project progress, and providing technical assistance and training to other professional and technical staff. Incumbents are expected to supervise the work of consulting staff on large or complex projects, represent the City concerning engineering matters with public agencies and private concerns, and coordinate and monitor the budget for assigned division. The Principal Civil Engineer classification can be distinguished from lower-level engineering classes by performance of the most complex engineering tasks requiring a high degree of knowledge related to all areas of major project and program planning design, plan review, and contract administration.
