Position: PRINCIPAL PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER (TRAFFIC)
Salary Range: $109,570 to $184,934 Annually, negotiable depending on qualifications

Hours: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday - Friday
Other: Valid Florida Driver’s License and PBC Risk Management Department driving history approval prior to appointment.
Palm Beach County’s Engineering and Public Works Department’s Traffic Division is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Principal Professional Engineer to join our team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Principal Professional Engineer with Traffic Engineering, your role will be integral to planning, managing, and enhancing the safety and efficiency of the County’s transportation infrastructure. Primary responsibilities include:
Grant Administration: Administer all federal and state grants received by the Division to support traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) upgrade/update initiatives/projects.
Traffic Signal Systems: Analyze traffic signal timing and oversee the design/review of traffic signal timing plans to improve traffic flow and safety.
ITS Management: Oversee the design/planning, development, and operation of the ITS program, including cutting-edge technologies like fiber optic communications, video monitoring cameras, high tech vehicle/pedestrian/bike detection, and dynamic message signs.
Interagency Collaboration: Coordinate with municipalities, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and other County departments to align efforts and achieve project goals.
Personnel Leadership: Plan, assign, and review work of staff. Develop the team to maximize professional growth of personnel.
Operational Efficiency: Research, develop, and implement new procedures to enhance operational effectiveness within the Signal & ITS Systems section.
Technical Review: Provide liaison and technical reviews related to traffic signal and ITS systems design/operations for projects led by consultants, FDOT, and the County Roadway Production Division.
Public Response: Respond to citizen traffic signal operations complaints and inquiries from the County Engineer, elected officials, and the Action Center.
Documentation & Reporting: Review and comment on special projects and reports to ensure technical and policy compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires you to possess a Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Traffic/Transportation Engineering, or closely related field. Additionally, you will need a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in professional traffic engineering; however, if you possess a related Master's Degree, the position will require only six (6) years of experience in professional traffic engineering. Two (2) years of experience in the supervisory aspects of engineering are also required.
Additionally, you must be licensed as Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Florida or licensed as a P.E. in another state and obtain a license as a P.E. in the State of Florida within 11 months of hire.
